Using the theories on iconoclasm forwarded by scholar Bruno Latour, coined by the term "iconoclash" in 2001, a literary criticism is presented of the eighteenth-century Gothic novel entitled "The Monk" by Matthew Gregory Lewis. Topics include anti-Catholicism, the supernatural, the Enlightenment, and the symbolism of virgins.
