From the Field to Academia: Preparing and Adapting to a Teaching Career.
- Authors
McCabe, James E.; Morreale, Stephen A.; Lambert, David E.; Beausoliel, Marcel F.
- Abstract
This article offers experiences, reflections, and perspectives of four professors in the social sciences (criminal justice) field who came to academia after a career in law enforcement, working as adjuncts, obtaining doctoral credentials, gaining tenure-track positions, and being granted tenure. The focus is to provide guidance to new faculty who are entering academia after careers as practitioners. Further discussion includes the steps and processes of assimilating on campus. While this reflects the perspectives of only four professors, there is value here for those who have left or are leaving the field to join the academic ranks of the social sciences.
