- Abstract
An essay is presented on the role of trade cards in social life and consumer culture in the 18th century. It discusses various aspects of consumer and material culture in 18th-century England, with particular focus on the illustration of women's clothing on shopkeepers' trade cards. The author discusses fashion culture, English fiction, and the sexual connotations associated with buying and selling clothing as depicted in English fiction, periodicals, and engravings.
