- Abstract
This article discusses the history of literature written by black authors in the Río de la Plata region of South America, which has its roots in the 19th century with Uruguayan author Jacinto Ventura de Molina. It examines Molina's professional career during this time period, including his popularity in the capital of Montevideo during the 1820s and 1830s. The author provides a brief biography of Molina, with particular emphasis on his early life, which coincided with the growing tensions between Spain and its colonies in the Americas, and the eventual wars for independence, which are reflected in his works. Molina's impact on the growing opportunities for black writers in the region is also explored.
