- Abstract
The article discusses the agricultural economy in the Fraser River Valley and Lower Mainland regions of British Columbia. A land rent model of competition for agriculture and urban land use, and the effectiveness of niche and direct marketing strategies in the rural-urban fringe (RUF) are discussed. Economic aspects of organic farming and agricultural production at the urban fringe are discussed. The impact of local, provincial, and federal policies on agriculture are also discussed. The development of local and organic agriculture marketing strategies in the RUF is discussed. The return on investment from a conventional commodity-based marketing system is noted.
