- Abstract
The article presents information about Philips Roger Dodge who has been awarded the young investigator award by U.S. Child Neurology Society. Dodge was born in Essex County and attended the University of New Hampshire (1941-1943), transferring to Yale University (1943) as part of a U.S. Army-sponsored program. The unexpected advent of the Korean War resulted in Dodge's temporary detachment to Tokyo Army Hospital where Dodge served as a neurologist and a psychiatrist. While in Japan, Dodge forged lasting bonds with the then developing Japanese neurological community. Dodge then established the child neurology program at Massachusetts General Hospital under Doctor Raymond Adams. Dodge's knowledge of neurological diseases and their mechanisms and pathology was generous and was to deepen throughout ensuing decades. Dodge's own clinical research has included prescient observations on early infantile toxic encephalographic and subsequent leadership in characterization of Reyes' syndrome. The individuals who have been recognized with the Young Investigator Award of the Child Neurology Society are examples of the kind of commitment and achievement Philip Rogers Dodge envisioned and cultivated.
