- Abstract
Brazilian Journal of Biomotricity, v. 4, n. 1, p 57-64, 2010. Strength training has been outstanding and deserves great attention in prescription fitness. Usually the intensity of strength training is based on the test of one repetition maximum (1RM). This study sought through a search that consisted to 12 men trained to assess the maximum strength by testing 1 RM and the ability of repetitions with 85% of its maximum strength by testing the maximum number of repetitions (NMR) for the year bench press, and to compare the results with the existing literature. The results indicated an average of NMR was 5.90 ± 0.57 repetitions. When we relate the NMR and 85% 1RM with the recommendations in the literature, 5 to 7 reps with 6 repetitions be the number of repetitions to be held at 85% 1RM obtained p ≤ 0.001. Through this result, we can conclude that the prescription of training through the percentage of the maximum load is an alternative that can be used in the prescription of exercise. For the bench press, this sample is kept within the limits prescribed by the literature.
