- Abstract
The article discusses the development of various printing types associated with roman letters throughout history. The use of different types in broadsides, advertisements, and lithographed posters in the 19th century is explained. Type designing in privately owned presses is given particular emphasis. The work of various typographers is described, including Stanley Morrison, Elmer Adler, and Lucian Bernhard. Emphasis is given to the font and paragraph markers used in various editions on "Candide" developed by Adler and illustrator Rockwell Kent.
