- Abstract
In 2003, the Hickman and Reaves study of local law enforcement agencies found that just 1% of police agencies required a 4-year college degree for new police hires, 6% required some college, and 8% required a 2-year college degree. Countries around the world are increasingly requiring college degrees for police, even going so far as to develop nationwide police science programs and even law enforcement colleges (Finnegan1976; Rogers and Frevel 2018; Marins, David, and Del Vecchio 2019; Hoover 2005; den Boer 2017; Chen 2018; Cao, Huang, and Sun 2016; Bartkowiak-Théron 2019; Bäck, Vallès, and Padyab 2017). A 2003 study of local law enforcement agencies found that just 1% of police agencies required a 4-year college degree for new police hires, 6% required some college, and 8% required a 2-year college degree (Hickman and Reaves 2003; Reaves, 2009).
