- Abstract
An essay is presented on the textbook controversy and culture wars in West Virginia from the 1980s to the 1990s. Philosopher Maxine Greene's idea that people must be grounded in their own histories to improve the society is discussed as well as the application of her landscapes of learning concept led to a conservative backlash and culture wars. Also explored are educators' efforts to achieve economic freedom, the causes of the culture wars, and the popularity of conservatives.
