- Abstract
A glass vessel of Isings Form 62/AR 119 from cremation burial 1358 of the Ulmer Straße necropolis in Günzburg has a hitherto unknown base mark with the abbreviated name of Caius Salvius Gratus set within a vine. It has not been possible to determine the potential origin of the vessel by archaeological methods alone. Therefore, we decided to subject the object to ICP-AES analysis with a comparative sample from Augsburg. The results of the analysis fit into the average range of Roman glass. While the Augsburg sample provides evidence for the use of recycled glass, the sample from the Günzburg necropolis shows that this vessel was made exclusively from new glass, meaning the two analyzed glass vessels must have come from two different manufacturies. This leads us to presume that the extraordinary Günzburg glass vessel was created and exported by a workshop dedicated to the production of higher-quality glass, based somewhere outside Raetia, possibly in Italy.
