- Title
Representation and Backlash: The Positive and Negative Influence of Descriptive Representation.
- Authors
Haider-Markel, Donald P.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the findings of the study that examines the effect of the election of openly lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) individuals on legislation introduced and enacted in the U.S. state legislatures from 1992-2002. The researcher resolves that the number of legislative bills passed that are supported by the LGBT group is related to the number of legislators in each chamber. It was also found that an increase in descriptive representation has a positive influence on the interests of individuals formerly marginalized.
