Bears, Boars, and Other Socially Constructed Bodies in Hrólfs saga kraka.
- Authors
MCGLYNN, MICHAEL P.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the nature of the body based primarily on the bear body motif of the Böovarr Bjarki, the thematic hero in the Old Norse-Icelandic Hrólfs saga kraka, a Norse-Icelandic saga dating from the early modern period. It describes the scenes in the saga wherein Bjarki projects an animal body that represents him in battle. It explores the appearances of Bjarki in Saxo Grammaticus' twelfth-century Gesta Danorum, sixteenth-century Bjarkarímur, and the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Hrólfkrakarímur.
