Abstract
The article reflects on the origins of species and the adaptive evolution of their genomes under natural and agricultural selection. It highlights the findings of a study mentioned within the issue which focuses on two taste receptor genes homologous to human bitter receptors, which are under directional selection in one of the three distinct panda populations. It further investigates the origins of melon and sweet orange species which have distinctive local genetic variations.
