- Abstract
Objective: Smoking is a common condition in the community and associated with various health problems. Studies showing the effect s of smoking on nasal physiology are limited and report conflicting results. In our study, we aimed to investigate the effects of smoking on nasal physiology by using nasometer and acoustic rhinometry. Material and Method: Thirty active smoker participants and 30 non-smoker subjects were included to study. Acoustic rhinometry was used to measure nasal volumes, and nasometer device was used to measure nasalance that showing nasal resonance. Results: In the analysis of the acoustic rhinometry data of the participants, it was observed that while there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in the pre-decongestion volumes and minimal cross-sectional area (MCA) values of the left nasal cavities of the patients (p <0.001, p =0.014), no statistically significant difference was observed in all values for right nasal cavity and after decongestion of left nasal cavity (p >0.050). There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of nasalance scores (p =0.911). Conclusion: No significant changes in nasal volume or resonance were observed when the effects of smoking on nasal physiology were examined.
