The article presents a case study of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, a prize offered for the invention of high fuel-efficiency cars, to develop a deeper understanding of how prizes marshal resources for and can implement governance approaches in the U.S. Topics discussed include role of Innovation prizes; enactment of the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010; and the U.S. government innovation policy.
