- Title
Aikido Defenses Against Real-World Attacks.
- Authors
Suenaka, Roy Y.; Taylor, Chad
- Abstract
Aikido is frequently accused of being just a spiritual art, rather than an effective form of self-defense. Indeed, many aikido schools have justified that accusation by ignoring the self-defense aspect in lieu of tradition and philosophy. While not meritless, this biased concentration weakens aikido's effectiveness in the street. This article addresses this concern by exploring how the principles of aikido are used in real-world encounters and recommending training methods to better prepare students of aikido for effective self-defense.
