- Abstract
Is it possible to think about an economic history of the Spanish Meseta Central? In this article we try to put together the main contributions to the modern economic history of Madrid, Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha and Extremadura with a perspective that stresses the interaction between those autonomous regions. We conclude that in the last century and a half the industrialization and modernization of Madrid has changed completely the landscape depicted by David Ringrose for the previous time. Madrid has provided dynamism to the Meseta and has been a model for the catching up of the other regions. The distance to the Madrid model, in geography or in terms of economic and entrepreneurial policies, help us to explain the level of development that has been achieved.
