- Title
Television and Passivity.
- Abstract
The article discusses the findings of a research by the Rutgers University regarding the passivity of television viewers compared with other waking activity. Most unusual about the research is its methodology, called the experience sampling method. Some 1,200 people were asked to wear electronic pagers and fill out forms describing their moods whenever their beepers went off, about six to eight times a day for a week. The subjects did not know that television was the topic of study. The sample not included many career-oriented people, who generally have little time to participate in such studies. The beeper responses showed that people spend an average of 2.5 hours a day or half their leisure time, watching television.
