Sustainable Fiber Trials Move Forward.
- Abstract
The article discusses an innovation in regard to the processing of long bast fibers such as hemp and flax. The article describes how the Naturally Advanced Technologies Inc. (NAT) discovered how to process the fibers on cotton-spinning equipment in order to provide environmental sustainability in textile production. Details are provided in regard to the engineering and processing of the fibers, including the Crailar F-, X-, and C-Series enzyme process. The article explains how the fibers are intended to provide a substitute for textiles and materials such as organic cotton, polyester, and composite. Information regarding the knitting and weaving of the fibers in the production facility in Craik, Saskatchewan is provided. Also discussed is the hydrophobic properties of fibers.
