- Abstract
The article discusses the Austrian art movement of Actionism and its complement, Direct Art, as expressed in the works of performance artist Günter Bruns in the 1960s and 1970s. The author particularly highlights Bruns' reflections on how state power and violence have an effect on the human body. Other topics addressed include his collaboration with artist Otto Mühl, the social context of the 1968 student movement and Austria's alleged failure to come to terms with its Nazi past, and his interest in using self-mutilation, sex, and masturbation as motifs in his art.
