- Abstract
Hepatocellular cancer of the liver continues to present enormous challenges to the treating physician due to its rapid growth rate and relative resistance to current chemo- and radiotherapeutic regimens. The need for effective chemo-or radiotherapy is indicated by the fact that approximately 90% of patients with this disease are not candidates for surgical resections; and in patients who undergo resections, over 50% will have recurrent disease. The most effective therapy has been the use of regional directed chemo- and radiotherapy techniques. Marked improvement in response rates has been noted with both modalities being combined. Recent results are reviewed and point to possibilities of use in the adjuvant settings. The definition of clear-cut therapeutic end points and accurate evaluation of therapeutic response are imperative in the treatment of these patients. Copyright © 1995 S. Karger AG, Basel
