- Abstract
The article "Sustainable Area Nature Conservation - The Implementation of International and European Biodiversity Goals Using the Example of Wilderness Areas in Germany" deals with the implementation of biodiversity goals in Germany, particularly in relation to the designation of wilderness areas. It is noted that EU member states are lagging behind the self-imposed and internationally agreed goals. The categorization of criteria for wilderness areas is based on the non-binding guidelines of the IUCN and their specification by EUROPARC. The article sheds light on German area nature conservation and its anchoring in the Federal Nature Conservation Act in the international, European, and national context. Various categories of protected areas are defined, including strict nature reserves, wilderness areas, and national parks. However, there are difficulties in Germany in accurately assigning protected areas, as the quality and level of protection can vary. The term "wilderness" is not found in the German Federal Nature Conservation Act, therefore existing protection categories must be examined to determine if they meet the criteria for wilderness areas. It is emphasized that true wilderness in Germany has almost disappeared due to the long history of cultivated landscapes. The article also emphasizes that the undisturbed course of natural processes plays a crucial role and that there must be an ecologically valuable area that can develop in the foreseeable future. It is pointed out that the understanding of wilderness allows room for the development of nature and that species protection does not have to be the primary focus. It is recommended to establish clear EU guidelines for the categorization of protected areas and to consider the recommendations of the IUCN. It is also noted that Germany can designate further wilderness areas to contribute to ecological sustainability.
