- Abstract
Background: Positive behavioural support (PBS) is an established approach in intellectual disability services. PBS has potential to better understand behaviours that challenge that may arise in association with mental health difficulties and address multiple challenges facing healthcare providers. Method: A systematic review and descriptive analysis were undertaken to identify the benefit of PBS in mental health settings. Individuals supported by such services may be receiving support for a broad range of mental health disorders, including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidality. Ovid and EBSCO were searched to identify as many peer-reviewed articles as possible. Following screening and data extraction, eight articles were deemed eligible against the inclusion criteria. Results: From the eight studies, 51 patients with a variety of mental health diagnoses were identified. PBS was successful at reducing target behaviour and enhancing system-wide quality of life in all eight studies. However, followup was not consistently reported, meaning, at present, the long-term effects of PBS in such settings are unclear. Conclusion: Based on the findings, it was concluded that PBS shows potential in mental health services, given its applicability to target specific behaviours that challenge. Therefore, further pilot studies are recommended to add to the existing evidence base, with consistent follow-up and demonstration of how PBS might be effectively integrated into mental health service settings.
