- Abstract
This study aims to describe the relationship between translation and orientalism and the effects of activities carried out with orientalist approaches on translation. In this study, the orientalism concept, historical processes thereof, and reactions created in the East were evaluated in a general framework using a diachronic method, then the effects of orientalist activities on translation were disclosed with a micro approach. The West tried to dominate through its communication with the East on translation activities, which revealed the main instrument role and importance of translation in orientalist activities, both in terms of communication and culture. The activities carried out within the framework of orientalist activities are not only about transferring a translation, however, these translations are mostly projects created with orientalist approaches beyond transferring from one language to another. This project was carried out within the framework of perceptions towards Eastern culture, and it has been aimed to make Eastern culture be understood differently in the West. Within this period, especially the translations of the Quran have a special place. The Arabic editions and translations of the Quran in Europe are projects, which are planned primarily for political and financial interests, and especially for making colonialism and missionary activities successful in Islamic states. While the Western polytheists were translating the Quran into Western languages, they deviated from the original message given in the Quran and conveyed their ideas and religious prejudices under cover of translation. Thus, it has been aimed to have an impact on the perception of the Quran in the Western world through orientalistcentered translations. So, all orientalist attempts made with these goals established a ground for current islamophobia.
