- Abstract
The «Descent of Christ into Hell» is possibly the most obscure mystery of Christianity. Yet it sheds some light upon the deepest question of human existence: what happens after death? Jesus Christ himself suffered the fracture of His human nature - according to the biblical and patristic formulation, while his body remained in the tomb, his soul «visited» the place of the dead. He, however, resurrected, vanquishing death and converting it into a portal that opens out to everlasting life. In this way He redeemed both the dead and death itself. This thesis first reviews ecclesial formulations (biblical, patristic, theological, artistic and magisterial) on the «Mystery of Holy Saturday» to gather those elements that illumine, with a Christological or Paschal light, the postmortal destiny of human individuals. The concluding essay offers a systematic synthesis of individual eschatology as patterned after the Sacred Triduum of Christ.
