- Abstract
The article traces the struggle for survival of the monarchy of Thailand. Topics discussed include the origin of the Thais from southern China who migrated into the Chao Phraya river valley in the 11th or 12 centuries and had their first monarchy under the kingdom of Sukhothai in the 13th century, development of the kingdom of Ayutthaya into a commercial center in the 17th century, and the decentralized nature of authority in the kingdom of Thailand in the 19th century.
