- Abstract
The article compares the incidence and treatment of gout in Great Britain in the eighteenth century and in the contemporary period. In the 18th century, gout was considered a disease of wealth, tied to a luxurious lifestyle of food, drink, and idleness. Treatments include changes in diet and drinking habits, poultices, and purges. Northern England has the current highest level of gout in the 21st century which is tied to high levels of regional unemployment and alcohol consumption.
