- Abstract
The research points to the knowledge of the negative environmental impact caused by underground mining in the period 2006-2013 in the North Department of Santander. The date of granting of environmental licenses allowed precisely define the operating volumes and consequently the amount of wood needed to build fortification structures, specifically the levers. At the time of the investigation are active hundred thirty seven (137) coal mining licenses whose presence is in seventeen of the forty municipalities of jurisdiction. The municipalities of Cucuta, El Zulia and Sardinata possess 62 % of the concessions. Regarding the use of wood for the fortification of the mines, only 29.5% are of legal origin. The activity used seventy six types of wood from different species, but the species is the most widely used patula pine (Pinus patula) with 38.6 % preference. With regard to the loss of plant cover in the intervention area, a desk review of each and every one of the mining titles during the investigation period they were made coal mining took place. Subsequently evaluated each mining title, determining that deforestation in the study period reached 449 hectares equivalent to 1.55 % of the area occupied by the concession. Similarly it was established that from 1990 to 2006 4,824 hectares corresponding to 18 % of the total area of mining exploitation titles were deforested. The environmental authority began sanctioning environmental processes 14 % of users in 2012 and to 10.6 % of users in 2013.
