- Abstract
Children who have experienced trauma and/or adversity in their childhood are prone not only to physical and mental illness, but also to difficulties in relationships, such as the reenactment of traumatic relationships. Therefore, child welfare facilities require an approach that takes into account the child’s early developmental history and the effects of traumatic experiences, and there is a high need for sexuality education in facilities. In order to provide sexuality education in facilities, it is necessary to understand children’s sexual development. Children’s sexuality is nurtured along with their physical, cognitive, emotional, and relational development, and it is important how children can prepare for their puberty/adolescence. This is because many of the challenges seen during adolescence emerge from unfulfilled and leftover issues from early childhood. Sexual behavior begins in adolescence based on their attachment style in infancy and restorative experiences in childhood peer relationships, but unstable attachment and trauma symptoms are known to be associated with risky and problematic sexual behaviors. Because trauma affects children’s sexual development and sexual behavior, a Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) perspective is essential in support and education. It is necessary to address children’s sexual behavior using the TIC approach of realizing, recognizing, and responding to the effects of trauma to resist re-traumatization. A systematic/holistic approach that is developmentally appropriate as indicated by UNESCO’s guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) is required. The creation of a safe environment and staff care, which are prerequisites for this approach, are also important issues.
