- Abstract
As the financial crisis remains uncertain, coronary heart disease (CHD) continues to be a relevant public health concern among island-based Puerto Ricans. In spite of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) nationwide progress in closing the gap in healthcare access, Puerto Rico is facing numerous healthcare challenges that could worsen conditions among the adult population with CHD. We used public available data from the 2012 and 2015 PR-BRFSS. Odd ratios and 95 percent confidence intervals were computed as a result of multivariate logistic regression analysis to examine unmet healthcare access changes among adults with self-reported CHD. From 2012 to 2015, some improvements for unmet healthcare access were found, including uninsurance rate, unmet healthcare providers, and healthcare checkups, but not for medical cost as a barrier after model adjustments. As the crisis continues to unfold, similar studies are wanted to document needs that Puerto Ricans adults living on the island with heart diseases might experience in the near future, including chronic disease management for CHD.
