- Abstract
This article describes the FrameWorks Institute's process of developing, testing, and refining an explanatory metaphor so as to better communicate about elder abuse to the public. Qualitative interviews, group sessions, and a quantitative survey experiment were used to test the effectiveness of a set of candidate metaphors. FrameWorks' study finds one metaphor ("Social Supports") to be particularly effective in bridging gaps between experts and public understanding of the issue. The resulting findings hold important implications for advocates and other communicators looking to make elder abuse a more salient public policy issue.
