- Authors
Šipka, Danko
- Abstract
This article provides a statistical analysis of the Macedonian dialectal vocabulary, as presented in the Markovik (2020) atlas of Slavic dialectology. It explores the sources and motivations behind lexical variation, highlighting the interaction between language and culture. The analysis reveals that borrowing, composition/derivation, and semantic shifts are major forces shaping the lexicon, with semantic shifts combined with other mechanisms accounting for 42% of cases. Turkish is the dominant language for borrowing, followed by Greek and Albanian. The article concludes by comparing the findings to broader Slavic data sets and emphasizing the contact nature of borrowings in the Macedonian dialectal vocabulary.
