- Abstract
The article examines the impact of early stage breast cancer on the functioning of families with adolescents using path analysis. Chronic medical illness in a parent has been studied primarily from the perspective of the diagnosed patient, not from the perspective of other household members. The illness-related demands that the mother and father report because of the mother's breast cancer, as well as their social support and education, establish the context in which they and their adolescent manage and function. Substantial literature has documented that in both early and late stage breast cancer, both the diagnosed women and their husbands have concerns about death, recurrence, uncertainty, and lifestyle disruptions, and they experience both distress and mood disturbance. Family members' affect the household's psychosocial functioning coping behavior, the quality of the marital and parent-adolescent relationships, the father's and mother's depressive mood, and the adolescent's self-esteem.
