- Abstract
The article presents an examination of Macedonians who emigrated from the country following the country gaining independence in 1991 in order to seek employment in high-skilled jobs abroad. It explores the experiences of this generation of emigrants, discusses the conditions that existed in the newly independent country that allowed them to emigrate and examines how their departure contributed to the creation of transnational families within Macedonia. Topics discussed include the history of emigration from Macedonia, brain drain and skilled labor emigration and the conditions of Macedonia's middle class in the post-independence period.
