- Title
The Army in the Woods: Spruce Production Division Records at the National Archives.
- Authors
Crosman, Kathleen
- Abstract
The article discusses the archives of the U.S. Army Spruce Production Division at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration in Seattle, Washington. It notes that the division was headquartered in Vancouver, Washington and was created by the U.S. Army during World War I to increase timber production, particularly of Sitka spruce, for constructing airplanes. The author suggests that the records, which contain correspondences, could be particularly useful for genealogists because they shed light on soldiers' concerns such as furlough requests, sick leave, and promotions.
