- Abstract
This program design demonstrates how higher education students can undergo a social transformation when actively participating in a virtual preparation program intended for international participation in the high impact practice of study abroad. The learning objective of this international preparation program is to demonstrate connections between developmental empathy and intercultural communication for transformative student development and successful global participation. The program curriculum includes an extensive breakdown of developmental levels of empathy and how it relates to diversity awareness and intercultural communication through lectures, videos, interactive activities, assignments, and reflections. The target audience includes higher education study abroad administrators, faculty, and institutional partners. The proposed conversation outcome is to provide a guide on how to incorporate this training as part of pre-departure preparation for all international study abroad programs.
