- Abstract
In the book "Michele Savonarola, A Mother's Manual for the Women of Ferrara. A Fifteenth-Century Guide to Pregnancy and Pediatrics," the author Michele Savonarola gives advice on pregnancy, obstetrics, and pedagogy. The manual was written in the vernacular language in the 15th century and is aimed at the women of Ferrara. Savonarola deliberately chose to use the vernacular language in order to better reach the women. The book has only been preserved in three copies from the 15th century and was first printed and edited in 1952. It laid the foundation for a textual tradition that placed female midwives under the authority of doctors. The editor Gabriella Zuccolin interprets the addressing of women as readers as somewhat ambivalent, as not all women could read. The book provides insight into the medical literature of late medieval Italy and the complex role of women as recipients and experts of medical knowledge.
