- Abstract
The rate of conversion of cerrado in other use surpasses that of all other biomes in Brazil. Remote sensing is the only practical means to monitor the evolution of its area and its conversion into other land cover at this scale. The objective of this article is to study the regeneration process of cerrado vegetation after a eucalyptus plantation and to determine if Landsat spectral data can be used to estimate the age of regeneration. A multi-temporal sequence of Landsat images was used to determine the age of 47 control plots for which structural data was also acquired. Pearson's correlation was used to find which variables were most related to age. A multiple regression model of the age of regeneration was built using the 2007 image that explains 61% of the observed variance. Validation data show an average age difference of 3,7 years with the model. The model was used to generate a regeneration age map havig a good correspondence with our knowledge of the area.
