- Title
Safety Lessons: The 1938 Burgon's Crossing School Bus and Train Accident.
- Authors
SWEDIN, ERIC G.
- Abstract
The article discusses a 1938 traffic accident in Utah in which a school bus was struck by a train. 24 children were killed in the accident. According to the author, the bus driver was unaware of the oncoming train because the windows and doors of the bus were closed and covered in condensation. It is suggested that the accident triggered an increase in awareness and safety regulations regarding railroad crossings by school buses. Details on the settlement between parents of the victims, the Jordan School District, and the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad are also presented.
