- Authors
AGUIAR, LUIS L. M.; MCKINNON, ANN; SOOKRAJ, DIXON
- Abstract
In this article the author examine issues surrounding the arrival of 140 black Jamaican workers and students in the central Okanagan Valley region, an area in the Canadian province of British Columbia. The authors found that the newcomers, a majority of whom were temporary migrants to the region, were largely unwelcome by the white population. A number of topics are addressed including the neoliberal economics and the recruitment of guest-workers, the need for a commitment to social justice, and the racism of the area.
