- Abstract
The article titled "Turtles as Prey of Crested Caracaras (Caracara plancus) on the Katy Prairie, Texas" discusses the diet of Crested Caracaras, a bird species that consumes a variety of foods including turtles. The authors observed a pair of adult caracaras carrying small turtles to their fledglings in a specific location on the Katy Prairie in Texas. They found numerous small turtle carcasses beneath a sugarberry tree, indicating that caracaras regularly prey on turtles. This observation raises conservation concerns, particularly for the western chicken turtle, a subspecies that is under threat from urbanization in Texas. Further study is needed to determine the impact of caracara predation on western chicken turtles in the area.
