- Abstract
This exploratory study examines the demographic profile and diagnoses of Asian deaf and hard-of-hearing consumers in Maryland who received behavioral health care services from January 2016 to January 2019. Results show that (a) most of the consumers lived in private residences, (b) most of the consumers felt somewhat satisfied in their mental health recovery, (c) almost half of the consumers had mood disorder diagnoses, (d) nearly 25% of the consumers had a schizophrenia diagnosis, which was more than three times higher than the prevalence for non-Asian deaf consumers, and (e) Asian deaf and hard-of-hearing consumers were more likely to have alcohol-related disorders than non-Asian deaf consumers. The discussion includes comparisons with deaf and hard-of-hearing counterparts other ethnic groups studied by Crowe (2019). The depiction of Asian people--hearing as well as deaf and hard-of-hearing--as the "model minority" in the United States serves to conceal actual mental health and alcohol use issues prevalent in the Asian deaf and hard-of-hearing communities.
