- Authors
BOUR, ISABELLE
- Abstract
This article examines five previously unknown French reviews of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman and of The Wrongs of Woman, by Mary Wollstonecraft, published in the 1790s. It contrasts the French and the English reception after discussing Wollstonecraft's life in Paris, which helps understand the way her works were assessed. It also looks at the French appraisal of some of Wollstonecraft's contemporaries, especially Ann Radcliffe and Charlotte Smith, to bring out the specificity of the reception of Wollstonecraft's works.
