- Abstract
This article discusses a rare and unusual complication that occurred after a percutaneous patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure procedure in a 47-year-old female patient. The patient had a central retinal artery occlusion, atrial septal aneurysm, and a right-to-left shunt. Although the PFO closure procedure initially went well, the patient experienced palpitations six weeks later, and subsequent imaging revealed that the device had embolized into the descending aorta. The patient was readmitted for percutaneous retrieval of the device, which was successfully accomplished without causing vascular damage. The article highlights the challenges and potential risks associated with device embolization following PFO closure and emphasizes the importance of continuous post-operative monitoring. It also discusses the technical demands of percutaneously retrieving an embolized device and suggests that this approach may be a viable alternative to conventional surgical methods. The authors disclose potential conflicts of interest, and no data were generated or analyzed for this paper.
