- Title
The Real Gender-Bender: The Curious Case of the Coverage of the Steve Stanton Story.
- Authors
Kenney, Rick
- Abstract
Newspaper coverage in early 2007 disclosing the life-changing plans of a transgender city manager and detailing the political fallout from that disclosure exemplified one individual's struggle with institutionalized power: not only that of the municipal government he managed, but also of the news media in his hometown. This textual analysis and ethical critique of communicative practices evident in the Steve Stanton news coverage in the St. Petersburg Times and the Tampa Tribune should serve as reminders that in a rapidly changing culture, journalists need to be prepared to report accurately and fairly about complex gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender (GLBT) issues.
