THE NATION THAT VANISHED.
- Authors
CASEY, PEARLE R.
- Abstract
The article presents information on the Natchez culture of the Mississippi river valley. As of 1938, there were only two remaining speakers of the Natchez language, and the culture had disappeared. During the time of European colonization of the Americas, however, the Natchez were a powerful Native American group. An account of their 1729 war against the French colonists of Louisiana is provided. Traditions which were part of the Natchez culture are discussed, including their religious ceremonies, political organization, and the system of trails known as the Natchez Trace.
