An interview with optical scientist Grover Swartzlander is presented. He discusses the motivation for starting his work on optical lift using a uniform collimated beam of light. He states that he has earlier achieved optical tweezers, that provide a means of moving particles perpendicularly to the direction of the incident light beam. He focuses on the physics of optical lift through radiation pressure from the refracted and reflected rays of light on the object.
