The article focuses on the current state-of-the-art conditions of water beetle systematics, including description of water beetle taxa, their evolutionary relationships and their use as model systems in systematics. It refers to families within five major groups of aquatic habitats including Myxophaga, Hydradephaga and Hydraenidae.
