- Abstract
What is the meaning of bodily tooth movement? Is it the general movement of the rigid body "tooth", or rather a special type such as parallel displacement? Is it the movement of the entire tooth or just of certain parts of the tooth? Do crown and root have to move on the congruent paths or is the noteworthy movement of the center of resistance a sufficient condition? A review of the orthodontic literature of the last 300 years shows the meanings on this topic sometimes drifting apart. By analyzing the instantaneous centers of rotations, todays column puts the discussion on a rational base.
